Broken Compass

My sense of direction is simply nonexistent. I will be the first to admit that I could get lost in a round room. What if I held a compass in my hand, would it help?  Since I've never actually held a compass, I could not say whether it would benefit me or not. I picture myself in the woods aimlessly wandering and holding this object prominently out in front of me and still being utterly bewildered as to which direction to take.

Compasses actually remind me of sailors and this in turn reminds me of the boat I once owned that had a broken compass on the dash. It's little plastic dome has thin spiderweb cracks running down from the top due to some sort of previous impact and all it did was wobble and gyrate from the motion of the waves splashing underneath the boat. Gazing down at this broken compass always saddened me a bit because I knew I would have been fascinated to see it in full function. It would have made me feel more like a true sailor on the sea versus a mom on a lake with kids and snacks for the ride.

Regardless, possessing a compass typically means you want the assurance of knowing one hundred percent the direction you are headed. I also believe you have to have some compass-reading skills, for it is not at all like following the walking GPS app on a smartphone. The function of a compass is to give a sense of reassurance that one is not truly lost.

I ponder on the thought of a "life" compass. What if there was such a thing? Always knowing your path. Always being directed toward the correct destination. Imagine that. Like runways lights for a jet plane landing at its destination. Although life has not been hard comparatively to most, it still has handed me challenges per se...I've been handed a broken compass. "Here, Cindy, figure it out. You're on your own. Good luck!"

I have been walking my path alone for a while now and I know for a fact I am stronger. I didn't really need a working compass. Even with my terrible sense of direction, I figured it out. I never got lost: I just followed my intuition compass and this was spot on.

Compasses are an amazing, directional tool invented close to two thousand years ago. In life, I only get a bit confused with the direction I needed to take. I never get lost. I don't need a compass that works properly, and I am pretty sure that I never will. Having my broken compass clenched in hand was all that I ever needed.
